Warning

Warning: Scam Travel Adverts Targeting South AfricansΒ  Dear Members,   We have recently been made aware of an uptick in bogus flight and travel advertisements circulating on Facebook, misleading customers into believing they are booking legitimate discounted flights through well-known international carriers such as Emirates.   We would like to take a moment to explain how the scam works, so that you may better advise your clients and stay protected. The target sees a Facebook ad promoting unbelievable airfare deals with major airlines. When they click on the ad, they’re directed to complete a short questionnaire: Β Β – β€œAre you flying in the next few months?” Β Β  – β€œAre you over 65?” Β Β  – β€œEnter your WhatsApp number to claim your deal.” A scammer initiates a WhatsApp call. In one reported case, the scammer asked the victim to “give a code sent via WhatsApp before we continue. Providing that code gives them remote access to your phone, effectively taking control of the device. The scammers often operate in loud and chaotic environments during the call, likely to create urgency and confusion. What You Can Do: Speak to your clients about this specific scam trend. Reinforce the message: β€œIf a deal looks too good to be true, it likely is.” Never share WhatsApp verification codes with anyone – even someone claiming to be from a legitimate airline or travel agency. Advise clients to check directly with their agent if they are ever unsure about a travel offer. Encourage clients to verify social media promotions by visiting official airline websites or calling their advisor directly. Consider including a short β€œTravel Safely” reminder in your correspondence, warning against scams. If you or your clients suspect that a scam is in progress, we urge you to report it immediately to the South African Cybercrime division or your local police station.   Thank you for your continued vigilance in protecting our industry and your clients. Please share widely, and let’s keep each other informed.   Kind regards,   The ASATA Team

My Singapore experience

My Singapore ExperienceBy Gillian Roffe – 11 June 2025 Singapore is a city that instantly welcomes you with its warmth and hospitality. From the moment you arrive, the friendliness and efficiency of the locals leave a lasting impression. Their pride in showcasing the best of Singapore is admirable, and for those who love shopping, this destination is a dream come true. English is widely spoken, with Mandarin as a secondary language, making communication easy for most visitors. I had the pleasure of visiting Singapore in April this year and wanted to share some highlightsβ€”from food and shopping to hotels and must-see attractions. Getting There We flew with Singapore Airlines, consistently rated the best airline in the world. The onboard service was exceptionalβ€”polished cabin crew, delicious meals, and top-tier comfort made the journey a breeze. Upon arrival, Changi AirportΒ lived up to its world-class reputation. Immigration was quick, and staff were courteous and efficient. Within 30 minutes, we were in the heart of the city. Where to Stay We chose the Hilton Hotel, which offered an excellent experience. A helpful tip: consider upgrading to the Executive Room Package. This includes exclusive lounge access, afternoon high tea, evening sundowners, and dinner with your choice of drinks. Complimentary coffee and tea are available all day. Breakfast is included and features an extensive buffet to suit all dietary needs. The hotel’s restaurant holds a Michelin StarΒ and serves a mix of European, Chinese, Malaysian, and Asian cuisineβ€”beautifully prepared and full of flavor. Many restaurants in the Food EuphoriaΒ group also hold Michelin stars and offer exceptional dining. You’ll find these spots mainly on ground or basement levels in shopping centres, and all accept both cash and credit cards. Exploring the City Singapore is best explored on foot, so bring comfortable shoes. Orchard RoadΒ is the main shopping thoroughfare, packed with major shopping centres like ION Orchard, Paragon, Jewel at Changi Airport, Clarke Quay, and Marina Bay Sands. While Marina Bay’s luxury stores are eye-catching, they are also high-endβ€”perfect for window shopping. If you’re hunting for bargains, Bugis Street MarketΒ and ChinatownΒ offer fantastic value. Bugis VillageΒ is particularly lively and great for souvenir shopping. Getting around is easy with the MRTΒ and bus systemsβ€”both punctual and user-friendly. Grab, a popular ride-hailing app, works well for taxis. Drivers are exclusively Singaporean, highly knowledgeable, and courteous. The city traffic flows efficiently, and with security cameras on every corner, the roads are safe and orderly. We didn’t see a single police officerβ€”yet everyone followed the rules. Booking Attractions Singapore is always bustling, so pre-booking attractions is essential. I recommend using the Get Your GuideΒ app to purchase tickets in advance. Be sure to download them in a secure Wi-Fi environment like your hotel, as not all areas have internet access. This ensures smooth entry when scanning at venues. One standout experience was the Evening Cruise and Gardens by the Bay Light Show, which we booked through a local agency. The small group size (no more than six people) and knowledgeable guides made it truly enjoyable. Iconic Experiences A visit to Raffles HotelΒ is almost a rite of passageβ€”especially for their iconic Singapore Sling. Expect a bit of a wait (around an hour), but once inside, the atmosphere is lively, and service is efficient. Two Slings cost approximately R1,600Β based on the April exchange rate (R14/1 SGD), and they’re worth every cent. Another must-try is Afternoon High TeaΒ at Raffles, a refined experience featuring exquisite cakes, scones, and pastries. Reservations are essential, and the cost is about R1,500 per person. Coffee lovers shouldn’t miss BACHA PALACE, located in many shopping centres. Their coffee and gourmet treats are a delight for caffeine connoisseurs. Must-See Attractions Gardens by the BayΒ is a top attraction. Entry to the outdoor Supertree GroveΒ is free, while access to the SkywayΒ requires a ticket. The Flower DomeΒ and Cloud ForestΒ house plant life from around the globe. We were thrilled to find a section dedicated to South African flora. The Cloud Forest misting show at noon is not to be missedβ€”absolutely magical! The Sky Deck at Marina Bay SandsΒ offers stunning city views. The complex is expanding, with a fourth tower expected by 2028–2030. Each tower features unique experiences and numerous dining options. Sentosa IslandΒ is another must-visit, known for its beautiful beaches and fun attractions like Universal Studios SingaporeΒ and the S.E.A. Aquarium. Entry to the aquarium costs around R652 per adult, and it’s a hit with visitors of all ages. Final Thoughts Singapore offers a seamless blend of culture, modernity, and natural beauty. With so much to exploreβ€”from gourmet food and luxury shopping to lush gardens and vibrant marketsβ€”there’s something for every traveller. I’d also be happy to share more insights from my journey. I look forward to visiting Singapore againβ€”it’s truly a destination that stays with you. β€” Gillian Roffe

Rodrigues

Rodrigues Rodrigues is a picturesque island located in the Indian Ocean, known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. As part of the Republic of Mauritius, Rodrigues offers a unique blend of natural beauty and vibrant traditions. The island is characterized by its rolling hills, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters, making it a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Visitors to Rodrigues can explore its numerous hiking trails, enjoy snorkelling and diving in its coral reefs, or relax on its serene beaches. The island’s small, friendly population is known for their warm hospitality, and visitors often get a glimpse into the local way of life through traditional music, dance, and cuisine. The culture of Rodrigues is a fascinating mix of influences, reflecting its history as a meeting point for different civilisations. This is evident in the island’s Creole language, widely spoken alongside English and French. Traditional crafts, such as basket weaving and fishing, are still practised, providing a glimpse into the island’s rich heritage. Whether you are looking for a tranquil escape or an adventure-filled holiday, Rodrigues offers a unique and unforgettable experience in the heart of the Indian Ocean. We spoke with Gillian Roffe, owner of XL Bay Travel, who visited Rodrigues during December and January, and she had the following to say: Escape the noise and find peace and tranquillity at Rodrigues Island, located east of Mauritius, where the Indian Ocean is right on your doorstep. Surrounded by beautiful turquoise waters and coral reefs, Rodrigues Island is the only island in the Indian Ocean entirely encircled by a coral reef. The beaches are wide and serene, offering stunning sunset walks. The ocean is warm and offers safe swimming areas. Constance Hotel Group operates two resorts on the island, Tekoma and Mourouk. Tekoma is a tranquil retreat with luxurious features and fine cuisine, while its sister hotel, Mourouk, caters to families. Snorkelling, kitesurfing, and hiking trails keep you active and engaged. South African travellers can enjoy full-board or half-board packages. Constance Tekoma boasts 32 ocean-facing villas. The layout and gardens remind me of a resort in Greece, but they lack the usual fringed palm trees we associate with Mauritius. I spent Christmas and New Year in Rodrigues, and for those seeking an alternative holiday option, I can genuinely recommend the island. There are approximately 50,000 residents on Rodrigues, but car rental, transport, and other accommodation facilities are available, and the roads are in perfect condition. We hired a driver for a half-day tour of the island, which was interesting as the vegetation turned to lush ferns and trees in the mountains. The weather was perfect, with a light shower to cool the temperatures. The pool and ocean are warm. Reaching Rodrigues, the flight path is via Mauritius and does require a short layover before catching the domestic flight of 1 hour 35 minutes to the island. The general manager and staff at Takoma are friendly and very accommodating.Penny arranged the trip for us and our friends. Happy Birthday XL Bay Travel

Happy Birthday XL Bay Travel Today is September 3rd, and I’m reflecting on the day 21 years ago. It was a Monday morning filled with anticipation and excitement. What a journey it has been! I remember feeling a mix of exhilaration and nervousness. Despite the substantial financial investment required, I never doubted my ability to significantly impact the travel industry. Β  Travel brings joy, pain, and frustration. Ask anyone passing through an airport who has experienced delayed flights or difficult border agents. Travel agents are a special breed of people. You must have stamina, stay calm, and resolve the issues.Β  It makes it easier if you have a wonderful team of travel consultants, support staff and suppliers. Β  I thank our wonderful clients, and travel fans on social media, my staff and suppliers for a wonderful travel journey.Β  Happy Birthday to us”, Gillian Roffe, managing director of XL Bay Travel.
